PRESERVING TRADITIONAL BATAK MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS IN THE MODERN ERA
Talking about Toba Batak music cannot be separated from various aspects. As we know, initially, the use of music for this ethnic group was generally associated with rituals of a spiritual nature.
It is used in certain ceremonies. Like communal society, Batak Toba also bases their empirical experience and spirituality through music. That is why, the social status of Toba Batak musicians has a special place in society. They are considered the chosen clever figure.
Therefore, in every ceremony, a special place must be provided for them to carry out their duties. One of their tasks is to mediate human relations with Debata Mulajadi Nabolon (the Creator) through music.
Music is considered the most effective way to draw a person closer to his God. Of course, because music is the easiest medium to touch human feelings. Moreover, the tone model and format in traditional societies, such as the Batak, tend to be characterized by repetition. In music, this concept makes it very easy for a person to go into a trance.
Another musical instrument made of bamboo is called balobat. Balobat is also known in Karo and other Batak tribes. As a solo instrument, balobat is used for personal entertainment while grazing cattle in the meadow or while guarding rice in the fields or in the fields. Balobat is a stick of bamboo that has a hole. At one end of the base, a hole is cut in the shape of a triangle, which functions as an air chamber (like the head of a recorder).
